Episode Three – No Way to Treat a Lady

Who’s Who At This Point

  • Hank Moody = Nick Carraway
  • Lew Ashby = Jay Gatsby
  • Janie Jones = Daisy Buchanan (Only mentioned, not seen)
  • Trixie = Jordan Baker

Parallelisms & References

  • Hank says to Lew, “…tell me more about your girl…the one who got away…your Daisy Buchanan.” To which Lew answers, “…I don’t talk about that stuff in broad daylight.” Many of the major Gatsby events take place during the night.
  • Trixie is a half-reference to Jordan Baker: both have already been to Gatsby/Ashby’s mansion, both know Nick/Hank before attending any of the parties, and both are romantically linked to Nick/Hank.
  • Jordan is considered to be an independent, “new woman” just as is the overall persona of Trixie.
  • Jordan is known for cheating at golf tournaments and “bending the truth”, such as Trixie bends the truth that a hand-job is “hardly cheating” and follows it with, “…sometimes my whore logic gets all fucked up.”
  • While I discussed the name connection of ‘Ashby’ and ‘Gatsby’, there is also a connection of ‘Ashby’ and the ‘Valley of Ashes’, which is featured prominently in Gatsby.
Cultural References
  • Trixie asks Hank, “If I said to a client, ‘you’re so fucking tumescent right now’, would that be hot?” – ‘tumescent’ is an adjective meaning ‘swollen’.
